A Lick of Life: March

It's a late one this month! I've had no internet access for most of the month, so doing anything (you know, blogging... WORK!) has been nigh on impossible. Fingers crossed our new provider can get us back online tomorrow. It's also been a pretty packed, stressful month for me, so photos haven't really been first on my agenda, oops!

I had my hair coloured professionally in March... lets just say it didn't go well. This was the first attempt. After one wash I was left with cartoonish yellow-blonde hair. Every time I caught myself in the mirror I let out an "eep!" sort of sound, but ended up just trying to repeat my mantra "It's okay; David Bowie Vibes". I went again just over a week later and its a bit better/darker, but fading fast!

This is the only lipstick I've been wearing all month. Urban Decay Comfort Matte in 'Carnal' - apparently its super close to the sold out Nars limited edition lipstick in 'Kiss Me Stupid', and I'm finding it really suits red hair!

It was this one's birthday! Aaaand, he bought himself his first car! He is now the super proud owner of a shiny gold Mini One - and I'm in looooove with it. It's gold - of course I'm in love with it.

Harry took around 200 photos to get this one. I need to get better at having my photo taken.

Lets hope April is full of better, warmer days for everyone! Did anyone else have a full on March??

Favourite Things: July

My favourites this month. Again, they could be anything! From movies and tv to food and makeup, let's see what I've enjoyed this month... 1. Yoga. I've taken it up again! I'm easing myself in with the 30 days of yoga challenge with "Yoga With Adriene" on YouTube. I completed this last year and thought it would be a handy tool to get myself back in to the swing of it. I seem to be on a bit of a fitness kick at the moment, so if anyone has any tips for an ultimate beginner to fitness, please let me know! I don't like all of the quick fix stuff that seems to go around so often on social media, so none o' that please and thanks! I do have an end goal in mind, but I don't mind if it takes me a while to get there the healthy way.

2. A new Netflix original series; Stranger Things. First off, can we just talk about this typeface? Jesus. My eyes turned in to massive hearts and popped out of my head when I saw it. BEAUDIFUL. AND THEN THE POSTER! Eesh. I love a good classic illustrated poster. You can find the artist Apart from all the good artwork for this, it's a really great series. I honestly think it's probably the best new tv show I've seen all year. I don't want to give anything away about it if you haven't seen it though, so go watch it!!!

3. The fact that Harry's family garden is filled with yummy fruit and vegetables. Why does something that's home grown, even when it hasn't been grown by you, taste so much better? This month I've been enjoying courgettes, artichokes, sorrel, raspberries, strawberries and mint. The tomatoes will be ready soon, too. 4. This tea: I think this is my favourite earl grey ever (so far), and now that I'm out of boring in comparison Waitrose tea bags I can enjoy this every day instead of only occasionally when I'm feeling faaaancy 💅🏻. I'm a lover of anything bergamot, and this is really bergamot-y and floral and mmmmgood. If you're an earl grey lover and haven't tried this, come over for a cup, and bring some biscuits!

Favourite Things: June

My favourite things/times/places/people this month:

  1. A friend of mine, whom I've known since I was 14, got married this month! I'm so happy for her and her now husband, they are a wonderful couple. It was also SOOOO lovely to see friends I haven't seen in years!
  2. BBC Iplayer has recently started Releasing entire series in one go (joining the "binge watching" movement I guess) and I indulged myself by watching the entire series of The Living and The Dead. Partly because I saw that Colin Morgan was in it (MERLIIIIN!), but mostly because it sounded good and Victorian-ghost-story-creepy. Juuuust the way I like it. It was fantastic! Even Harry watched it, which is saying something. I wasn't expecting the weird modern element in it either, it definitely kept me watching.
  3. Just after my birthday Harry's mum booked for us all to go canoeing on the river where we live. It's going to sound really silly, but it was honestly one of the best, most calming things I have done in a looooong time. I'd really love to be able to do it more often.
  4. Another TV series, and one I have mentioned briefly before: Penny Dreadful! I've just started watching season 3 and yet again, it's brilliant. Way over the top, self indulgent and dramatic and Eva Green is fantastically creepy as usual.

I'd really like a book to read next month, can anyone suggest anything for me? I'm usually a fiction kinda girl, Haruki Murakami is one of my favourites if that gives you an idea!

Favourite Things: May

This is a new kind of post for me, although I have probably inadvertently done it continually through the years on this lil ol' blog; My favourite things this month! They could be ANYTHING! From food to fripperies, I'll go over a few things I'm loving/obsessing over/doing/appreciating for the month. It will likely be mostly fripperies, me being the type of person that tends to live in my own little bubble. But I'd also like to cover more interesting (I hope) things as well. For example; 1. This has actually been over the last few months, and will probably be quite ongoing, but I am gradually changing over all of my cleaning products, makeup and toiletries to cruelty free brands. I know I'm pretty late to the party, and I feel awful for it. I've always been conscious of it and don't tend to use things like bleach and harsh chemical cleaners regularly, but it was never in the forefront of my mind while shopping. There is no excuse! Since becoming vegetarian 6 months ago, and now living in a household that composts & recycles everything humanly possible, and grows most of its own vegetables, I feel like I've woken up a bit more and become more in tune with "the bigger picture".

I'm really loving Method cleaning products, because as well as being cruelty free, Eco friendly, and not damaging to aquatic life, it's also super safe for use around animals. So I can clean happily without having to kick Zissou out all of the time! Another plus is that because I feel good using them, I'm actually cleaning more (we'll see how long that lasts. Ha!).

2. SPRING! There were a few days this month that were beauuuuuutiful! Blossom everywhere, busy bees, birds going crazy and I was hanging outside with my legs out(with lots of spf on, obviously.). Lovely. There is something to be said for Spring in the UK, if it decides to happen. There is a noticeable lift in everyone's spirits.

3. My new Too Faced Sugar Pop eyeshadow palette. It's not a new product, In fact I think it's been out for a couple of years?? But because I want to experiment a bit more with my makeup, I couldn't resist the colours. And Too Faced are cruelty free. Aaand it's actually my first ever eyeshadow palette. I know, right? Almost 26 years old and I've never owned an eyeshadow palette. I've always been a bit afraid of it to be honest. I have really dry skin all over, apart from my eyelids. I seem to have the oiliest eyelids known to man, which has always meant that whenever I have tried eyeshadow it creases within minutes and looks messy. But I recently discovered the magic of eyeshadow primer (I am so late to so many parties) and now I have no excuse! Obnoxious coloured eyelids, here I come!

4. Crimson Peak. I watched this in the cinema with my sister and her husband back in October last year and re-watched it this month for some reason. It's just so beautiful. Ugh. I cannot even describe how much I love the aesthetic of this film. That mansion. The costumes. The era. The fact that some of the spirits were played by actual people and not entirely CG. EVERYTHING. I have this thing for really old fashioned penny dreadful style horror/fantasy and when something along those lines comes out it pretty much instantly makes it on to my top list. The Art of Darkness book is definitely back on my wish list. And that reminds me; Penny Dreadful! I need to start watching season 3!

5. Starting to combat my ongoing issues with self-worth/self esteem. I tend to internalise A LOT and find it hard to talk about "stuff" and I feel like maybe having a bit more time to think this month has forced me to face it head on. I've never been confident in myself or the way I look and I think I need to stop fixating on it as much, stop comparing myself to other people (Hi Instagram!) and realise that I only have one body and I need to love it, accept it and respect it for what it is. I also need to give it what I needs; good healthy food and exercise. I feel that I eat a lot healthier now that I'm vegetarian, but I NEVER exercise. I like, never. My exercise is walking 20 minutes to Sainsburys and back 5 times a week to buy dinner. ITS BAD YOU GUYS. It's good to be actually talking about all this stuff though! RIGHT?!

If anyone can recommend any books or any educative things that may help me in my journey (I'm determined!) to "loving myself", it would be much appreciated. 💕
